Chennai: SSN institutions announced on 11 July a tie-up with the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), a non-profit think tank for scientific Research and Development.

Founder of SSN, Shiv Nadar and founder and chairman of CSTEP, V S Arunachalam signed the agreement at SSN in Kancheepuram district here.

On the occasion, Nadar also announced the appointment of Arunachalam, former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister and Head of Defence Research Development Organisation as Chief Scientific Advisor for SSN Research Centre, being established at the SSN campus.

Speaking on the occasion, Nadar said that CSTEP would provide the thought leadership, conceptual framework and policy advisory, while SSN Research Centre would undertake development of select technologies and take the research to the next level.

Arunachalam said SSN would take up primary development of a few chosen energy technologies that are sustainable and appropriate for the Indian environment as the first part of the collaboration.

He said energy sources like oil, gas, coal and nuclear reactors would dry up after a few centuries and solar energy would provide unlimited energy. When depending on the present sources, catastrophic environmental consequences affect the globe and energy security is affected since the energy sources are from unstable parts of the world, he said.

If solar energy sites are set up in six carefully selected sites in India, it would provide 20,000 gigawatt power, which would be suffcient, he added.
