The new structure reflects the next phase of Bharti's growth journey, which will be led by best-in-class professionals in various segments, says Sunil Bharti Mittal
New Delhi: Bharti Enterprises on Tuesday announced major management changes at the top and announced new structures for both its listed and non-listed companies. Manoj Kohli, managing director of telecom operator Bharti Airtel, has been named managing director of Bharti Enterprises, where he will oversee the group’s retail, insurance, food and agriculture and realty businesses, working closely with the respective chief executives.
As part of the restructuring, Gopal Vittal, joint managing director and chief executive (India) at Bharti Airtel, has been named managing director and chief executive (India and South Asia).
Bharti Airtel’s Bangladesh and Sri Lanka operations are being brought back under South Asia operations. Christian de Faria will be appointed by Bharti Airtel International (Netherlands) BV as managing director and chief executive (Africa), and will assume operational responsibility of the firm’s operations in 17 African locations.
The company also appointed Akhil Gupta as chairman of Bharti Infratel and vice chairman of Bharti Enterprises, who will also serve on other Bharti boards. D. S Rawat, chief executive at Bharti Infratel, has been named managing director and chief executive of Bharti Infratel and is being inducted into the company’s board.
For professional and structured oversight of the non-listed group companies, a new position of managing director, Bharti Enterprises, is being created, the company said in a statement. Manoj Kohli will be the first incumbent. The new structure will be effective from 1 April.
Under the new structure, the Bharti corporate office will be focused on and deal with matters of governance. Accordingly, Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman, Bharti Enterprises; three vice chairmen Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Rajan Bharti Mittal and Akhil Gupta, along with managing director Manoj Kohli and four Bharti veterans will form the Bharti governance board.
“The new structure reflects the next phase of Bharti’s growth journey, which will be led by best-in-class professionals in various segments," Sunil Bharti Mittal said. “This is another step towards transforming the group from entrepreneur-led, professional-backed to a professional-led, entrepreneur-backed one."
In addition to presiding over the company’s non-telecom businesses, Kohli will also be responsible for business development, and corporate and shareholder relations across the group. He will also serve on various Bharti boards including Airtel and be chairman of Bharti Airtel International (Netherlands) BV, which owns Airtel’s African operations.
