Mumbai: Tata Steel Ltd, the world’s sixth-largest steel maker, said on Thursday April steel sales from its Indian operations rose 31% from a year earlier to 452,000 tonnes.
The Indian operations account for about a quarter of the group’s total global capacity of 30 million tonnes annually, which includes its Anglo-Dutch unit Corus.
Sales of long products, used in construction, jumped 39% in April, while flat products that are used in automobiles and consumer durables such as refrigerators grew 27%, the company said in statement.
Earlier, a company spokesman said Tata Steel had raised prices of long products by Rs500 ($10.1) a tonne from 1 May, on strong market conditions.
