New Tata Motors CEO wants 100 days

New Delhi: The new chief executive of India’s leading vehicle maker Tata Motors appealed Tuesday for 100 days to get to grips with his job, a day after being named to steer the company into the new decade.

“I am enthused by having this opportunity to work for an Indian company with such high business ethics," Carl-Peter Forster said at a news conference in New Delhi, where he made his debut public appearance in his new job.

The 55-year-old Forster, the former head of General Motors’ European operations, will have overall responsibility for Tata Motors’ global operations as group chief executive, the company said Monday.

“People normally get 100 days, plus or minus. Give me that time and we’ll meet again," Forster told reporters, adding he was excited by the opportunity to grow Tata’s business both domestically and “out of India."

Tata Motors is the flagship company of the sprawling tea-to-software Tata group and Tata officials said Forster’s international background would help increase the company’s global reach.

Forster’s job includes overseeing Tata’s British-based luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, which the Indian company bought for $2.3 billion in 2008 and which helped push Tata to its first annual loss in seven years last year.

He takes over the job after Tata Motors reported late last month that its Indian operations swung to profit in the fiscal third quarter to December as government stimulus measures and cheap loans helped spur a demand revival.
