Thousands protest against BSNL in Leh
Leh, 26 September Thousands staged protest against alleged poor service being provided by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to its subscribers.
The slogan-shouting protestors began their march from Lal Chowk, passed through the main markets of the city, deputy commissioner’s office, old bus stand, culminating at the BSNL office near new bus stand.
They also pelted stones and burnt the effigy of the chief general manager.
A mini bus and a police truck were damaged in the stone-pelting besides minor damage to the BSNL building, official sources said.
Police used batons to disperse the protesters, some of whom were injured in the action, sources said, adding police detained six protestors but released them later on the request of representatives of different organisations.
Deputy Commissioner M K Bhandari, who spoke to the protestors outside his office near Polo ground, acknowledged the problems and assured them that administration would take necessary steps to redress the problems being faced by the people.
The main markets of the city also remained closed for most part of the day.
The Ladakh Tour Operator Association, All Ladakh Hotel Association, Ladakh Taxi Operator Union, Merchant Association and Contractors Association jointly organised the protest.
