Hyderabad: Connectivity solutions provider Silicon Image Inc. plans to focus on developing technologies specific to the Indian and Chinese markets.
Silicon Image’s technologies are used by nine of the top 10 television manufacturers in the world.
“We have to figure out how to develop products that are unique to India,” chief executive officer of Silicon Image Camillo Martino said on Friday.
Martino was in Hyderabad to open the company’s first research and development (R&D) unit in India.
The facility will design and develop semiconductor and intellectual property (IP) core technologies for implementation in mobile, wireless and consumer electronics products. The India office will house 80 employees initially.
Post the inaugural of the research facility, which Martino described as the first phase, the US-based company will also seek to expand its presence in the local market. “The market here, as in China, is a huge opportunity,” he said. “The second phase, which is more important, is the size of the opportunity.”
Martino said companies such as his were flocking to India and China to tap the market opportunity the two huge economies present and not because of the cost factor alone.
“Cost is not the only reason. Today the cost gap is narrowing. Income levels are growing. It is the opportunity,” he said.
