Bengaluru: Mobile advertising technology company InMobi Technologies Pvt. Ltd said it has partnered with Chinese app developer APUS Group to help it grow in India and access its more than 200 million users across the world.

Beijing-based APUS helps users of cheap smartphones based on Google’s Android operating system improve their user experience through apps that boost battery life, customize the interface on their phone screens, and organize apps in folders, among others.

InMobi will also have exclusive access to all APUS users in India, the company said.

India has roughly 300 million Internet users—the third largest in the world behind the US and China. A large majority of them access the Internet using inexpensive smartphones and cheap data tariff plans. It is a share of this pie that the Chinese company is looking to corner.

Many Chinese Internet companies are looking to grab a share of the rise in smartphone adoption in India, especially as growth slows in the domestic market.

Last week, Internet search giant Baidu said it is planning to invest in start-up companies in India and is looking for partnerships with Indian firms to expand its user base.

APUS aims to have 500 million users on its app by the end of 2016, of which a fifth is likely to be from India. The partnership with APUS will allow InMobi, which drives app downloads for brands and puts up display ads on various apps based on past browsing habits of shoppers, to reach out to a wider audience.

“While we have grown quickly worldwide in the past year, we think the opportunity that exists in India is still largely untapped and will lead the third wave of significant mobile growth, said Li Tao, the chief executive and founder of APUS.

InMobi said it will help APUS expand its footprint in India—increase its user base and market share—and will also help the Chinese company hire software experts here to develop solutions that suit the local needs.

Owned by Beijing Qi Lin He Sheng Technology Co., APUS is one of the most popular apps on Google’s app store.
