The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Friday came out with a report advising the government on better implementation of the Bharat Nirman programme. The report, called Bharat Nirman programme. The report, called Bharat Nirman Plus, urges policy changes in sectors such as power and irrigation, besides creating non-agriculture employment opportunities in rural areas and new government institutions in agriculture. This has the potential to create 30-40 million jobs in rural areas according to Adil Zainulbhai, managing director, India, McKinsey & Co., who co-authored the report.
Rural India accounts for 70% of the country’s billion plus population and 50% of the nearly $1 trillion gross domestic product. Yet, the 9% plus economic expansion has not permeated to the villages. “This programme can help in inclusive growth,” said Y.C. Deveshwar, chairman of ITC Ltd, who initiated the programme during his tenure as president of CII.
