Tata Steel FY11 crude steel production up 4.4% to 6.85 MT

New Delhi: Tata Steel Ltd, the Indian operations of the Tata Steel Group, on Friday reported a 4.4% growth in FY11 crude steel proudction to 6.85 million tonnes (MT), exceeding installed capacity at its Jamshedpur facility.
“The crude steel production at 6.855 MT exceeded installed capacity of 6.8 MT in the second year after commissioning of the expansion project,” Tata Steel said in a statement.
The domestic steel major had produced 6.56 MT crude steel in the previous fiscal. Crude steel is the first solid steel product upon solidification of liquid steel.
Considered as the world’s second-most geographically- diversified steel producer with presence in 26 countries, Tata Steel Group is among the top 10 global steel companies, with an annual crude steel making capacity of over 28 MT.
Tata Steel Ltd is expanding its installed capacity at the Jamshedpur facility to 10 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
Sales of the company also increased 4% in the 2010-11 fiscal to 6.41 MT vis-a-vis 6.16 MT in 2009-10.
Tata Steel said its sales of long and flat products went up by 7% and 2% to 2.87 MT and 3.53 MT, respectively during FY11 over FY10.
Long products include bars, rods and wires, structural shapes and rails are used in concrete, engineering products, gears and tools.
Flat products are used for ship building, construction, large diameter welded pipes and boiler applications. Thin flat products are used in automotive body panels, white goods and a number of other products from office furniture to heart pacemakers.
Sales of branded flat products crossed the 1 MT mark in the year, Tata Steel said.
