Mumbai: Employees of National Aviation Co of India Ltd or Nacil, that runs Air India, will strike work for two hours on Friday after the airline said it was unlikely to pay salaries of at least half of its employees in 3 July.
George Abraham, general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees’ Guild told Mint that at least 70% employees would participate in the strike. ”Since large part of employees are staying away from the work, it is obvious that flight operations will be disrupted,” he said, adding that the union has not received any assurance from the management about the disbursement of salaries.
Due to a severe cash crunch, Nacil had decided to delay the payment of June salaries by 15 days but later decided to pay on 3 July for half of its employees following a series of meeting with unions.
However, a Nacil spokesperson said the airline is working towards identifying the number of lower-income employees who will require salaries immediately to avoid defaulting on instalment payments made through direct debits. ”We are in the process of giving out salaries by 3 and 4 July,” he added. The board of directors of Nacil met on Thursday to discuss various measures including payment of salaries and cost cutting measures. Nacil has also appointed SBI Cap to advise it to prepare its business plan. The spokesperson did not divulge further details on board meeting.
