New Delhi: India, the world’s second biggest consumer of tobacco, needs to heavily tax cheaper forms of tobacco and raise awareness about harmful effects to curb the rising deaths caused by its consumption.
India needs to increase taxes on ‘bidi’ and on chewing tobacco, introduce pictorial warnings on packs, ban surrogate advertising and increase access to tobacco-cessation centres, according to a study by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Tobacco use may cause about 1 million deaths a year in India by 2010 unless steps are taken to encourage more people to shed the habit, said Prabhat Jha, a researcher at Toronto- based Centre for Global Health Research.
