New Delhi: Utility Tata Power Co Ltd expects to import 2 million tonnes of coal in 2008, mostly from Indonesia, a top company official said on Tuesday. “We will have to import about 2 million tonnes of coal this year. It will be imported mostly from Indonesia,” Amulya Charan, managing director of Tata Power, said.
He said the firm’s coal requirements will shoot up in the next four to five years with the commissioning of two new power units in western India.
Mumbai-based Tata Power is India’s oldest private power producer with a total generation capacity of more than 2,300 MW.
Last year the company won government rights to build a 4,000-MW power project in western India as part of its plans to add 10,000 megawatts by 2013.
