Bangalore: Huawei India, the local arm of the Chinese telecom equipment maker, will invest $150 million (Rs 770 crore) in a new research and development campus in Bangalore, Yao Weimen, vice-president, corporate affairs, Huawei India, said on Friday.

The company inaugurated a 400-seat global network operations centre in Bangalore, its first outside China, to manage client networks worldwide, and launched a pilot project with Bharti Airtel Ltd in Karnataka for 4th-generation (long-term evolution, or LTE, technology) services.

The company wants to double its R&D strength in India to above 4,000 people in a few years, Weimen said.

Huawei opened it first R&D centre in India in 2000 and operates a regional network operations centre in Gurgaon for its Indian clients. Overall, it employs some 6,000 people in India.

The company is developing India as a global hub, Weimen said. Other initiatives planned for the country include a network design and engineering centre.
