Chennai: The garment industry in the country is looking at achieving an export target of $25 billion by 2010-11, a top Apparel Export Promotion Council official said.
Garment exports would touch $9.3 billion by the end of the current fiscal, recording a growth of 9-10% over last year, AEPC chairman Vijay Aggarwal said at the inauguration of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) at Mogappair here.
He said to achieve the target of $25 billion, the industry would need “an additional 1.5 million people” and an investment of Rs35,000 crore in related infrastructure.
AEPC would be setting up 50 training centres across the country, of which three would be in Chennai, he said.
The council currently has 22 centres in the country and 24,000 people. “We will be setting up six more centres by September 2007 and also an academic cell at Gurgaon,” he said.
