Taipei: TSMC, the world’s biggest contract chipmaker, said on Wednesday that its revenue target for 2011 will not be affected by the devastating earthquake in Japan.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) chairman and chief executive Morris Chang also told reporters after a conference that the company had sufficient inventory and second sources of raw materials outside Japan.

“The only thing is infrastructure which does not normally have a second source and we are affected by Tokyo Electron," said Chang.

“If supply cannot be restored in the short term, it will affect the growth of our production capability for next year."

Semiconductor makers faced disruptions in supply after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan destroyed vital infrastructure and knocked out factories producing the raw materials for them.

Japan’s Shin-Etsu, the world’s top producer of silicon wafers used to make semiconductors and the plastic PVC, has suspended operations at its Shirakawa plant over the weekend.

TSMC has set its sales growth target at 20% in terms of US dollar.

When asked about concerns of lower shipments in the second quarter, Chang said, “Even if there is a slowdown, it will only affect one or two quarters."

“Demand is still there, for example for tablet PCs and smartphones; the shortage is only temporary. Once supply recovers it will solve the earlier shortage."
