New Delhi: Vodafone India Ltd, India’s second largest telecom service provider, has started selling SIMs that allows its customers to access 4G network in the national capital, in the run up to the commercial launch of its high-speed wireless data services in Delhi.

The sale is part of the telco’s steady roll-out of 4G services across the country. It has already started 4G services in Kerala and Mysore in Karnataka. The high-speed services will also be launched in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore before the end of the current fiscal.

“Customers who are upgrading to 4G-Ready SIMs will be rewarded with free 1GB 4G internet, at the time of launch," the company said in a statement on Thursday. “To ensure a smooth and seamless exchange of 4G-ready SIMs, these are being made available in advance of the commercial launch of Vodafone’s 4G services in Delhi and national capital region. A formal announcement regarding the launch, which is expected soon, will be made in due course," the statement added.

The telco started selling 4G SIMs in Mumbai on 6 January and has been testing the services in a number of markets after first rolling out the services in Kochi on 14 December.

The telcos are deploying the FDD LTE (Frequency division duplex - long term evolution) standard of 4G-based mobile data services, using the 1800Mhz band spectrum, mostly acquired through airwave auctions over the last few years.

Vodafone is one of three telcos in the country that has started rolling out the high speed wireless data services. The others include Bharti Airtel Ltd and Idea Cellular Ltd. All three telcos are launching the services ahead of the commercial launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd’s 4G services, which is likely in April-May 2016.
