Marks & Spencer appoints James Munson as India managing director
James Munson will replace Venu Nair who will be leaving Marks & Spencer to assume the role of chief commercial officer at Trent Limited
New Delhi: British retailer Marks and Spencer Group Plc (M&S), which operates in India through a joint venture with Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Retail Ltd, on Monday appointed James Munson as the managing director.
Munson will replace Venu Nair who will be leaving Marks & Spencer on 20 April to assume the role of chief commercial officer at Trent Limited, a retail chain run by the Tata Group. Munson is expected to take charge in May.
“We are delighted to appoint James Munson as our new managing director for our India business, one of our fastest growing markets. James has extensive retail experience and solid understanding of our India business," said Jonathan Glenister, Marks & Spencer’s regional director of Europe, India and Greater China, in a statement.
M&S currently operates 57 stores in India across 27 cities, the highest outside the UK. The retailer also recently launched the M&S brand across three online marketplaces--- Myntra, AJIO and Amazon.
Munson has been working with M&S since 2006 in different roles. Currently, he is the managing director of the Czech group with responsibility of 48 stores in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia. Between 2011 and 2013, Munson was the head of retail and marketing, India. In 2013, he took charge as the head of retail and supply chain.
Overall, Munson has over 20 years of experience in the retail industry including six in India and Czech region. As the managing director, “James will be responsible for continuing to grow Marks & Spencer’s joint venture business in India with Reliance Retail," the company said in a statement.
“I’m thrilled to be returning to India and have the opportunity to put our Indian customers at the heart of everything we do. As one of our key growth markets, this is a really exciting time to be re-joining the team," said Munson, in a statement.
