JN Port eases security for cargo movement
Mumbai: India’s biggest container port has agreed to a revised set of security procedures for clearing trailers that carry containers to and from the port, potentially avoiding mouting delays from recently changed procedures.
The new procedures were agreed to at a meeting called by the management of Jawaharlal Nehru Port and attended by representatives from the shipping lines,
The most recent procedures for screening trailers carrying cargo-laden containers at the container gate were implemented from 10 September after a theft of containers had thrown the cargo clearance mechanism out of gear.
Mint reported on 13 September that the revised security measures were slowing the movement of cargo.
A representative of a leading shipping line said the proposed new measures would ease the congestion and speed up the container movement.
The “port’s deputy chairperson has assured us that there will be new procedures which will speed up container evacuation. We are ready to give a chance to the port management considering the sensitivity of the issue," said Sanjay Potdar, president of Nhava Sheva Container Operators’ Welfare Association, which has a membership base of over 1,000 trailers.
According to the new procedures, the port will register all tractor trailers entering the port, apart from simplifying the procedure of issuing gate passes in order to expedite the movement of trailers carrying containers. The port has also suggested different colours for various entry requests. For instance, a request form for import-laden container will be yellow while a container meant for export would have a pink coloured permit.
JN Port handles more than 60% of the container cargo handled at all the ports in the country.
