GoAir, IndiGo refuse to ease on congestion charge issue

Premium

As the Saturday deadline set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or DGCA on reversing the Rs150-a-ticket congestion charge levied by all airlines neared, two carriers wrote to the regulator and said they would not fall in line.

Budget airlines IndiGo and GoAir have said they want to retain the congestion charge.

DGCA had formally written to all domestic airlines requesting them to withdraw the congestion charge after the Delhi high court had expressed its displeasure over the fee passengers are paying across the country even as congestion was limited to just Mumbai and Delhi airports.

Jeh Wadia, GoAir managing director, has asked the government to present the airlines’ need to “retain" the congestion charge before the courts. DGCA officials said they will forward the responses to the court. The next hearing of the court is on 17 April, when DGCA will present its case.

Air Deccan is the only low-cost airline that plans to give up congestion charge on short routes completely while adding up to Rs75 to the basic fares on long-haul sectors.
