Microsoft eyes holiday sales with $50 price cut for Xbox One

The discount reduces the price of the cheapest model to $349 in the US, with the console costing about 13% less than Sony's PlayStation 4

San Francisco:Microsoft Corp., trying to win back customers for its Xbox One game console from Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4, will cut $50 from the unit’s price next month ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The world’s largest software maker will offer the discount on any Xbox One console or bundle from 2 November to 3 January, according to a statement posted on the Redmond, Washington-based company’s website. The discount reduces the price of the cheapest model to $349 in the US, with the console costing about 13% less than Sony’s PlayStation 4, which retails for almost $400.

Microsoft’s latest console was initially offered with the Kinect sensor in a package that made it more expensive than the PS4. It’s narrowed that gap by unbundling the sensor to try to claw back some of the lead the PS4 has established in sales.

In August, Sony announced that it had sold its 10 millionth PS4. Microsoft only discloses information on Xbox One’s performance as part of the division’s performance, bundling numbers with sales of previous generations of the product.

Microsoft sold 2.4 million Xbox consoles in the three months ended in September, the company said last week.

The shares slipped 0.5% to $45.91 at the close in New York, leaving them up 23% this year. Bloomberg
