New Delhi: VMware Inc. will invest up to $500 million (about Rs3,017.5 crore) in India over the next three years to grow its operations in the country, the US-based virtualization and cloud infrastructure company said on Wednesday.

VMware’s India research and development operations are its second-largest, after that of its headquarters in Palo Alto, California. In 2013, the company’s headcount in India grew 17% to 2,300, its recent acquisition of AirWatch LLC, an Atlanta-based provider of mobile device management (MDM) software and standalone management systems for content, applications and email, adding some more employees in Bangalore.

“India continues to play a crucial role in our global product roadmap and growth strategy. The country’s outstanding engineering talent continues to impress us, and we stay committed to investing and growing our team here over the long term," said Pat Gelsinger, chief executive officer, VMware in a statement.

According to a study sponsored by VMware, server virtualization will save businesses in India about $3.89 billion by 2020. This reflects the costs normally associated with servers, power, cooling, real estate and server administration.

VMware started operations in India in 2005 and has offices in Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Globally, VMware reported a revenue of $5.21 billion for 2013, growing 13%.
