Opto Circuits set to launch device to treat heart patients
Bangalore: Medical devices maker Opto Circuits (India) Ltd plans to introduce a drug-coated balloon catheter, used to treat patients with heart ailments, next month, pending final approval from the regulator.
“We are going to introduce (it) sometime in November...as soon as we get final clearance from DCGI (drugs controller general of India)," said Vinod Ramnani, chairman and managing director. The device would be the first of its kind in the country, he said.
A drug-coated balloon is a device that can treat a clog in a stented blood vessel without having to use an additional stent.
Consumables such as stents, balloons, catheters and wires accounts for 57% of the total cost of an angioplasty, according to a 2008 report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and consultancy firm Ernst and Young. Angioplasty is the technique of mechanically widening a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel.
Ramnani expects to sell annually in India about 10,000 of the drug-coated balloon catheters developed by the company’s German subsidiary, Eurocor GmbH, and branded Dior.
Opto Circuits, which reported consolidated revenues of Rs488 crore in 2007-08, expects to end the year to March with revenue of around Rs800 crore.
