Reliance Retail Ltd, which axed about 1,000 jobs in Uttar Pradesh last month, plans to relocate around 700 of its remaining employees to operations in other states.
“We will have to redeploy them to other states,” said a senior Reliance official who asked not to be named as he is not authorized to speak to the media. However, he said “there is no clarity as yet” on which states the employees will be transferred to.
Last month, Reliance Retail laid off about 1,000 employees after the the state government ordered closure of all Reliance Retail stores in Uttar Pradesh, blaming the company for creating a law and order situation in the state.
The official said the sacked staff were frontline staff and “moving them (to other states) was not an option.”
However, the 700 people elsewhere in the state are skilled employees in supply chain, operations, finance, human resources and engineering store , among other departments, and they “can go to other states,” said the same official.
The Reliance official said it’s a “wait and watch situation” for the company when asked whether the company is now planning to exit the state altogether.
“It’s still in a stalemate situation,” he added.
Separately, Reliance has already said it planned to shift some 400 other staff in the state’s cities, such as Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabab, to nearby outlets in New Delhi and Gurgaon. The employees were part of the company’s National Capital Region operations and not affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh unit.
