Mumbai: Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, India’s largest utility vehicle maker, has christened its upcoming sport utility vehicle (SUV) NuvoSport, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

To be launched in the first week of April, the new offering is based on the Scorpio platform and will replace the Quanto.

Launched in 2012, the Quanto was a shorter version of the Xylo MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). It was company’s first attempt to break into the newly emerging sub-four-metre compact SUV market. Its sales, however, never took off, forcing the company to undertake a revamp and rebrand the model.

Pravin Shah, president and chief executive-automotive at Mahindra & Mahindra, said the company has identified a gap in the market and designed the NuvoSport to meet the needs of customers who lead an active lifestyle and are looking for a fun-to-drive SUV.

“I am sure that with the addition of the NuvoSport, we will further consolidate our leadership in the SUV segment and effectively address the entire gamut of customer segments across price points, ranging all the way from 4.5 lakh to 25 lakh," Shah said.

The NuvoSport has been designed by the company’s in-house design team and developed at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.

The Nuvo will be the latest of a slew of models Mahindra has launched since the beginning of fiscal 2015-16 as it seeks to recover ground in the SUV market, a segment that was its stronghold till firms like Renault India Pvt. Ltd and Ford India Pvt. Ltd created a new segment three years ago, changing the very composition of the SUV market.

In the first 11 months of fiscal 2015-16, Mahindra sold 209,422 passenger vehicles, up 3.79% from a year ago, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
