Heavy swells sink ONGC offshore supply vessel
Heavy swells sank Oil and Natural Gas Corp.’s offshore supply vessel Samudrika-10 operating in the company’s Bassein satellite field. The vessel was operated by Sical Logisitics under an operation and maintenance contract.
“Sea swells were as high as 4-5m. In such situations, our standing instructions to our personnel is to jettison whatever supply they have and save themselves. I am deeply distressed by this accident. We fear four to five people may be dead," said a visibly disturbed R.S. Sharma, chairman and managing director of ONGC.
Out of the 14 manifested crew members, nine have been rescued. The people who are feared lost at sea are contract employees.
The vessel started sinking at 12.30pm, 56 nautical miles from Nhava Supply Base. A helicopter and three vessels have been employed in search and rescue operations.
