Mumbai: Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T), India’s largest engineering and construction firm, has won an order from the ministry of defence, Sultanate of Oman, to construct an airbase in the country, it said in a statement on Thursday.

The contract was secured by the buildings and factories business of L&T (Oman) Llc, a subsidiary of L&T, the statement added.

The scope of work includes construction of the Adam Airbase in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Sultanate of Oman.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

The Middle East has been one of the mainstays in terms of foreign orders for L&T. The focus on the area was strengthened in recent years when the Indian economy grew at a sluggish pace, limiting the scope for infrastructure demand in the domestic market.

“We have been gradually establishing our credentials in the Middle East, especially in Oman, as a construction organization of calibre with the successful execution of many prestigious projects including the Salalah International Airport," said S.N. Subrahmanyan, member of the board and senior executive vice-president (infrastructure and construction) at L&T.

Shares of L&T rose 3.57% to 1,574.90 on BSE, while the benchmark Sensex index gained 1.81% at 27,112.21 points.
