Rourkela: Employees of a defunct refractory plant at Lathikata near here staged demonstration and blocked vehicular traffic on national highway (NH) - 23 on Friday demanding immediate payment of wages, salaries and other dues.
The agitating Orind employees also demanded payment of statutory benefits of retired and deceased employees which had not been paid over last one year.
The demonstrators claimed that the management was yet to pay the employees dues of about Rs 24 crore and had closed the industry since May 2011.
Despite several agitations, the management remains adamant despite instructions of state labor department for reopening the Lathikata unit.
Normal traffic on NH-23 was however, restored after sometime following intervention of Rourkela additional district magistrate (ADM), P. C. Pathi and superintendent of police, Himansu Lal.
