Adobe to offer its latest product line on pay-per-use model

Hyderabad: Software product company, Adobe Systems Inc. is planning to offer its latest multimedia and creativity software product line, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 as a subscription-based service.

Hosted on a cloud, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5’s software products can be accessed online, a delivery model known as Software as a Subscription (SaaS) service in technical jargon. Customers can pay for Adobe’s latest software on a pay-per-use basis.

The latest edition of Adobe, Adobe Creative Suite (CS) 3.5 includes design and development software for print, video, mobile and online media streams, and was recently introduced in India. Its product line consists of CS5.5 Design Premium Suite, CS5.5 Web Premium Suite, CS5.5 Production Premium Suite and an enhanced Photoshop Software Development Kit. It will initially be available through the company’s authorised resellers from May, when it will be shipped.

Company officials said the subscription-based service is currently available in USA, Australia, New Zealand and major European countries, and will be introduced in India, but refused to specify a time frame. “It still needs some pricing point. That’s still work in progress," said Prabhjeet Singh, country marketing manager, Adobe Systems India Private Limited here on Tuesday.

Adobe’s popular document management software Acrobat, for example, is already available in the SaaS model. Users can share and collaborate documents, spreadsheets and simple databases with others on acrobat.com. Subscribers of Photoshop Express, a Flash-based image editing web application from Adobe, can also edit their photographs online, on the website www.photoshop.com.

Adopting cloud computing (and/or Software-as-a-Service) can help a firm remain compliant with software licensing policy, said Anupam Nagar, Director- Forensic Services, KPMG in India. The company chose not to comment specifically on Adobe Systems Inc. but preferred to be quoted in a generic sense. “With cloud computing one is neither over licensed nor under licensed. One can be ‘rightly’ licensed."

Once introduced, the company believes the subscription-based offering would address the issue of piracy of its software. Currently, some of Adobe’s software are priced as high as Rs.1,54,791 (Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection), and users often fall back on using cheaper pirated versions found in grey markets across the country -- Nehru Place in New Delhi, National Market in Bangalore Chandni Chowk in Kolkata and Lamington Road in Mumbai, to name some.

We are addressing piracy not necessarily though pricing. Instead, we are looking at subscription as a model. We are also educating people on piracy, working with BSA, NASSCOM and on enforcement, said Prabhjeet. Business Software Alliance (BSA) is a non-profit trade organisation that represents some major software product companies including Microsoft Corp, Adobe Systems Inc., Apple Inc., and acts as an anti-piracy watchdog across the globe, including in India. National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), the body representing software companies in India, is working with Copyright Enforcement Advisory Council to curb digital piracy in the country.
