New Delhi: The drug price regulator, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), will be considering the issue of allowing a rise in prices of certain drugs, currently under price control, in an internal meeting on 31 July in response to petitions from drug makers that increasing input costs were making production of these drugs unviable.
“The meeting will be considering many things. Price revision is also on the agenda where specific applications from companies will be considered,” said an official in the ministry of chemicals and fertilzers, adding that the regulator was neither thinking of increasing prices across the board, nor it was looking at 70 drugs in particular. The Rs 34,000 crore domestic drug industry has been clamouring for an increase in the price caps on 74 drugs that are under direct price control of NPPA as well as relaxing the 10% price hike limit in a year for all the other drugs.
