Flipkart now in eBay mode
Online retailer launches marketplace platform allowing third-party merchants to sell their products on its website
Bangalore: India’s largest online retailer Flipkart.com launched its marketplace platform on Saturday, allowing third-party merchants to sell their products on its website.
With the marketplace platform Flipkart, which previously was a pure-play online retailer, is essentially offering similar services as those of eBay Inc, the online auctions site. The marketplace platform will give shoppers access to various brands and sellers under one roof and allow them to compare prices offered by various sellers.
Initially, Flipkart has signed on 50 merchants who will sell books, media and consumer electronics. Clothes, shoes and other products will be launched “soon", the company said.
“In the last 12 months, more than 80 million unique visitors have come to Flipkart. Five out of six online Indians visit our website. Sellers on Flipkart will get access to this vast user base—which is akin to the footfall in prime retail spaces in the top 10 cities of the country," chief executive Sachin Bansal said in a statement.
Flipkart will handle the shipping and delivery of products sold on its marketplace platform through its logistics partners and the company will continue to offer the “cash on delivery" option.
