Not much excitement yet

The Delhi Auto Expo started with a bang with Maruti unveiling its first compact SUV Vitara Brezza and Hyundai introducing the Tucson, but the buzz soon fizzled out with not-so-exciting products from other car makers.

The fun quotient was ushered in by Honda Motorcycles’ dinky Navi range of bikes. Honda claims it is a crossover between a scooter and a motorcycle. The product is being developed from scratch. It will primarily be targeted at teenagers.

The biggest theme of the show remains Narendra Modi’s flagship campaign Make in India. Every global executive is talking about it. There is very little focus on energy-efficient vehicles yet with urban crossovers and SUVs in the limelight. Chevrolet has been disappointing with its two Korean models—Essentia and Beat Active.

Maruti and Hyundai look to up the ante in the compact SUV segment with Vitara Brezza, Ignis and a yet to be unveiled concept Hyundai SUV. The Korean company also unveiled Tucson, likely to be priced above 15 lakh.

With Mustang’s launch ahead of the expo, the only showstopper seems to be the launch of Jeep and Jaguar F-Pace.

Unlike the 2014 edition, when the number of new models on display were few, this year, a number of launches are scheduled. With more than 80 new models on display, the organizers expect over one lakh visitors to throng the venue every day during public days (5-9 February).

#‎AutoExpo2016: The most popular public show in India goes live

In its second edition at Greater Noida venue, the Auto Expo 2016 promises to be bigger and better. Unlike the 2014 edition, when the number of new models on display were few, this year, quite a few launches are scheduled. The emphasis is on sports utility vehicles—compact and micro—and compact sedans rather than diesel guzzlers. With more than 80 new models on display, the organizers expect over one lakh visitors to throng the venue every day during public days (5-9 February). In order to accommodate more exhibitors (at least 65) and a larger number of displays (80 including cars, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers), the venue, India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, has been through a massive makeover. It now houses six large halls with an additional carpet area of 37,240 sq.m. The venue previously had only eight permanent halls measuring 27,648 sq.m.; as a result, in the 2014 edition, the remaining display was curated in temporary hangers measuring 32,400 sq.m. The gross indoor exhibition space has increased from 67,000 sq.m. in the previous edition to 73,000 sq.m. in the current edition.

Even as some of the domestic manufacturers such as Royal Enfield and Bajaj Auto Ltd have given the show a miss, the introduction of some of the iconic models such as Ford Mustang, Jeep are expected to continue the momentum.
