New Delhi: Global executive search firm Korn/Ferry International has launched a tool that can ensure a better fit between a company’s requirements and a candidate’s skills and attitude in an effort to address a growing need for such solutions.

With the launch of Korn/Ferry Advantage, the search firm hopes to widen the services it offers companies. “With increasing pressure on Indian companies to deliver world-class results in record time, hiring managers need to change their mindsets about how they identify and attract the best performers," says David Everhart, Asia Pacific managing director of Korn/Ferry’s leadership development solutions division.

“Companies need to take a holistic view not only of an executive’s education and work history but also her career motivation and soft skills," he adds.

Executive search firm Egon Zehnder International uses a competency mapping tool (which assesses the skills required for a job and then pairs these off against a candidate’s own skills and competencies) in its search process. Other hiring firms such as Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd, ABC Consultants Pvt. Ltd and Manpower India, a subsidiary of Manpower Inc., also use some form of assessment tools through alliances with assessment companies. In addition, the assessment solutions space has large independent players such as Thomas Assessments Pvt. Ltd, SHL India — part of UK-based SHL Group Ltd — and Bangalore-based MeritTrac Services Pvt. Ltd.

Using competency-based applications helps reduce the chances of a bad hire. “Functional and technical skills are important, but do not distinguish superior from average performance," says Everhart.

Korn/Ferry claims its tool is based on competency data on thousands of executives from around the world collected over nearly 20 years by Lominger International, an assessment firm it acquired in 2006 . “We have identified 67 leadership characteristics classified as 20 critical competencies," says Deepak Gupta, managing director of Korn/Ferry in India.
