New Delhi: Swedish telecom vendor Ericsson has bagged a three-year contract from Idea Cellular to provide next-generation mobile network equipment for five cities.
As per the deal, Ericsson will provide technical help to Idea in expanding its GSM network across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, Ericsson said. Neither company disclosed the deal value.
Ericsson will assist the Aditya Birla Group-promoted Idea to build an EDGE-enabled cellular network in the five cities. This will enable the service provider to have a smooth transition to a 3G ready network once 3G spectrum allocation is finalized, it said.
The global major would also provide radio access, microwave transmission and next-generation mobile soft switch network architecture till November 2009, it said.
“The GSM expansion will prepare us well for switch to a 3G ready network when the time is right," Idea Cellular Managing Director Sanjeev Aga said.
