New Delhi: State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is likely to place a Rs20,000 crore mobile telephony order with the two winners of the contract—Ericsson and Nokia—by mid-May, so as to increase its network capacity. “By the end of second week of May, we will be issuing purchase order (PO) to these companies. Since this is a huge order, a lot of details need to be worked out and we are currently doing that," said BSNL chairman and managing director A.K. Sinha. “Once the PO is issued and the companies accept the order, they have to produce the bank guarantee and then we issue the advanced purchase order for the first phase of the 45.5 million lines," he added. When issued, this would be the world’s largest single tender for 45.5 million lines of GSM telephones. By December, the first phase (for 17.5 million lines) is expected to be in place. The second and the third phases are for 14 million lines each. (PTI)

“We will bring an entirely new tourism concept to India and Kerala," he said. The resort, which is expected to be ready by 2008, would also have luxury houseboats and Kerala’s famous Ayurvedic therapy. (PTI)

Dell adds Canonical’s Linux to consumer PCs

San Francisco:Dell Inc., the second-largest PC maker, has chosen a version of the Linux operating system to sell with its consumer PCs as it works to win back customers from rival Hewlett-Packard Co.

The addition of Canonical Ltd.’s Ubuntu software comes in response to “overwhelming feedback" requesting that the Round Rock, Texas-based company offer Linux open-source software on its PCs, Dell said on its website.

Michael Dell, who retook the chief executive officer title in January, has made reaching out to customers a priority amid a slump in sales and profit. (Bloomberg)
