Star Alliance airlines to streamline back-end processes
The new technology investment and enhancement to operational processes will start with a new Star Alliance IT hub for baggage handling by end of 2016
New Delhi: Star Alliance, the world’s biggest airline network, will streamline its back-end processes including baggage transfers through multi-million dollar technology investments over the coming months.
This new technology investment and enhancement to operational processes will start with a new Star Alliance IT hub for baggage handling by the end of 2016, the group said after its chief executive board meeting in Zurich on Monday.
Air India is part of the alliance which also includes Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, United, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, SWISS, Turkish Airlines and THAI among others.
It offers more than 18,500 daily flights to 1,330 airports in 192 countries. Baggage processes are currently complicated by the fact that the relevant information resides in many different systems, the grouping said and besides airlines, each airport is running its own baggage system.
“When things do go wrong it is highly annoying to any customer affected," said Mark Schwab, chief executive of Star Alliance. “We believe modern technology can be of tremendous assistance in significantly reducing the number of baggage issues and providing faster and more accurate information for our customer service agents."
The board meeting also cleared development of standardised processes for off-airport / self-service check-in, for fast bag drop technology at airports, for baggage self-tagging and for automated travel document validation.
