New Delhi: Maruti Udyog Ltd, India’s biggest carmaker, reported a 17% rise in April vehicle sales as demand for a new Swift and Zen Estilo hatchback cars gained.
Maruti sold 50,352 cars, vans and sport-utility vehicles in India and overseas last month, compared with 43,127 a year earlier, the New Delhi-based unit of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp. said in an e-mailed release on 2 May. It is the 14th straight gain in monthly vehicle sales for Maruti.
Maruti introduced three new models or upgrades in the past nine months to retain its share of 50% of Asia’s fourth- biggest automotive market. The carmaker, which will start selling the SX4 model this month, is building new factories to take on competition from Renault SA and Volkswagen AG, who are expanding to India.
Sales in the local market increased 17% to 48,652 vehicles and exports grew 9.5% to 1,700 vehicles, Maruti said.
