Extra police deployed at Maruti Manesar facility
Gurgaon: At least 300 policemen have been deployed at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd ’s Manesar facility in Gurgaon late on Sunday evening in order to avoid any violent activities, two people familiar with the development said.
“We have deployed extra forces at Manesar facility in order to avoid any violent activities," said AS Mittal, joint commissioner, Gurgaon police.
He, however, declined to comment on the number of policemen deployed at the facility.
The company officials did not answer calls made late on Sunday night. Maruti Suzuki plant doesn’t work on a Sunday.
According to a worker with Maruti Suzuki Employees Union(MSEU)-the unrecognised labour union- at the firm’s Manesar facility the company has called for at least 250-300 policemen. “We fear a lock out by the company on Monday," said Shiv Kumar, secretary with MSEU.
The Manesar plant, which came into operation nearly four-and-a-half years ago, produces at least 1,200 cars per day. There are nearly 2,500 workers in the Manesar unit, of which around 40% are contract labourers.
The workers at Manesar facility went on strike on 4 June for 11 days, demanding recognition of the new union. Following this the company management had suspended 8 workers for instigating the protest.
During that period, it had made a loss of at least ₹ 400 crore loss in income.
