Berlin: German airline Lufthansa said it will boost global capacity 7.4%, adding 15 destinations to meet rising demand for services to North America and Asia during the coming summer season.
Lufthansa will serve 207 destinations in 81 countries, informed marketing and sales director Thierry Antinori at the ITB Berlin tourism fair.
The summer schedule starts on 30March and ends 25October. Asian airports were among those highlighted by the German carrier, with direct flights to connect Munich with Singapore and Frankfurt with Nanjing, China.
Antinori said Lufthansa would invest $200 million to improve or create first- and business-class lounges at JFK airport in New York and Mumbai, India.
Meanwhile, the airline planned to buy private jets and offer them to high-end clients. Lufthansa currently uses leased jets for such services.
It will also start offering complete holiday packages put together by the Dertour unit of supermarket chain REWE via its website.
The move was prompted by consumers who increasingly seek ways to put together their own travel packages online rather than booking via travel agencies, Antinori said.
The German airline carried more than 56 million people last year.
