Kolkata: Reliance Retail Ltd opened five ‘Reliance Fresh’ stores in the city, heralding the entry of the corporate in the retail market of West Bengal.
A Reliance source told PTI that the company opened three stores in Swabhumi Heritage Plaza in east Kolkata and one each in New Town and Budge Budge in the outskirts of the city on Friday.
He said that whether this number would go up depends on the acceptance of our ‘offerings’ by the people of the state. The source said that last year, the company intended to launch the stores offering full range of products including fruits and vegetables. But with a political furore raging then it was deferred by the company.
In a new strategy, he said that a ‘shop-in-shop’ model had been created with Keventer, which would sell fruits and vegetables. Initially, Keventer would sell only imported fruits, he said.
Asked whether Reliance Retail had the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) license for selling fruits and vegetables, he said this was not required for retailing.
“Keventer has the valid license”, he said. He said that the company’s objective was to create least controversy. “We are not here to take away the livelihood of small traders and farmers”, he said.
