Kolkata: Coal India Ltd on Friday said it has “terminated the services" of R. Mohan Das, its director (personnel and industrial relations) on instructions from the Union coal ministry.

Das, who became a director in 2007, was due to retire within a few months.

Several complaints were lodged questioning Das’s integrity, said a key CIL official, who asked not to be named.

A spokesperson for CIL refused to comment.

“Our appointments are based on contract appointments, three months either side. They have given three months salary and a contract termination notice. Anyway, I was going to retire in May, not that many years were ahead of me. And if the basic trust is not there, it will not even work also," Das told Mint.

He said he had “no idea" why he was terminated in a hurry. “Even I’m perplexed at this decision. Retirement benefits are in place, those are statutory payments. I’m now planning to go back to south, to my hometown Chennai. I am not keen on taking up new assignments, may be some social work or other thing I’ll get involved in," he said.

The decision to terminate him was taken by the ministry, said the CIL official cited above. The decision was taken after an inquiry, he added.
