New York: India-origin Indra Nooyi-led Pepsico along with the US State Department and General Electric have been named among the best employers to launch a career in the US by BusinessWeek magazine.

The league of best employers is topped by accounting major Deloitte followed by three of its competitors — Ernst & Young (2nd), PriceWaterhouse Coopers (3) and KPMG (4).

In the list of ‘Best Places to Launch a Career 2009´, featuring 69 entities, soft drinks and beverages major Pepsico is placed at the 53rd position.

The US State Department is at the fifth spot while industrial conglomerate General Electric is ranked 16. It also features the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) at 23rd place.

Regarding the list, the publication said virtually all of them are hiring far fewer entry-level employees than they did in 2008.

“But in other ways they stood out. As a group, they offered some of the top pay and benefits in their industries, the best training programs, and the most significant opportunities for rapid advancement," BusinessWeek noted.

Others in the top ten are banking giants — Goldman Sachs (6) and JP Morgan (9), retailer Target (8) and technology major IBM (10). Teach for America, which focuses on the education sector is at the seventh spot.

According to BusinessWeek, the ranking is based on a three-part methodology.

“The employer survey counts for 50 per cent of the final ranking, while the career services and student surveys count for 25 per cent each," it noted.

About Pepsico, the magazine said the company recruited on 234 undergraduate campuses in 2008-09 and “made job offers on 138 undergraduate campuses".

Other employers in the list, include software giant Microsoft (18), consumer products entity Nestle USA (25), telecom major AT&T (38), technology firm Dell (44) and accounting firm Grant Thornton (51)
