New Delhi: Tata Steel, the world’s sixth-largest steel maker, is reported to be interested in buying Colombia’s Siderurgica Nacional (Sidenal) to register its presence in Latin America.
“Russian mill Severstal and the Indian Tata Steel could be interested in making a bid to acquire Colombian steel making company Siderurgica Nacional,” Steel Business Briefing (SBB) reported.
However, when contacted, a Tata Steel spokesperson told PTI the company has so far not evinced interest in Sidenal, but it is always open for good opportunities.
SBB, a publication tracking the steel industry, said in a report Sidenal’s Boyaca teelworks has a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of steel per annum. The company also has a cut-and-bend centre with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes annually.
Brazil-based steel group Gerdau, which already controls Colombia’s Diaco and Sidelpa, would be interested in acquiring two other local steelmakers Comsisa and Aceros Boyaca, although it was yet to confirm the same, SBB added.
