Kancheepuram: Four people died of asphyxiation after inhaling methane gas during construction work at a sewage tank at the Hyundai car factory at Irrungatukottai near here.
Of the four people who died in the incident, three were engineers of Thermax, the company which is carrying out the construction work. The fourth person was a civil contract labourer.
Another person, who took ill, has been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai and his condition was stated to be out of danger, a fire service official said.
The incident occurred while cleaning a sewage tank, which was used to store wastes of paints and other chemical materials, the official added.
When contacted Hyundai Motors India Ltd Vice President (Administration and Human Resource) S. Ganapathy told PTI that the incident took place around 8.30 p.m. last evening.
“This happened at the construction site of a water treatment plant in our second unit. Out of the four deceased three were engineers employed by Thermax, which is carrying out the construction work, while the other one is a civil contractor employee,” Ganapathy said.
