New Delhi: SpiceJet will allow passengers to book air tickets with the help of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) using their mobile phones.

The integration will allow SpiceJet passengers to use their unique UPI IDs, i.e. Virtual Payment Address, to pay for all bookings made on the SpiceJet website. This payment solution, implemented by HSBC Bank on the SpiceJet network, will be over and above the net banking options available to the customers, the airline said on Friday.

On entering the UPI ID, the passenger only need to authorize the payment to SpiceJet using their UPI PIN on the UPI app being used to complete the transaction.

“By being an early adopter and integrating UPI for our website users, we are able to offer multiple payment options which greatly enriches our customer experience," Shilpa Bhatia, senior vice president -commercial, SpiceJet said in a statement.

The UPI interface, built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI, an organisation that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) set up to unify all the retail payment mechanisms under one roof), has been introduced to facilitate the transfer of payments from one person to another.

"With UPI adoption witnessing significant growth in the quarter ending March 2017, we believe that SpiceJet can use our offering to drive sales," Divyesh Dalal, Managing Director & Head Global Liquidity and Cash Management, HSBC India, said in the same statement.

SpiceJet which currently has 49 planes, has ordered nearly 205 next-generation Boeing 737 Max aircraft. Of these, 155 will be delivered between 2018 and 2024. The airline has a 13% share of the domestic market.
