Tata Communications to invest $200 million in Indian data centres
The firm, which has data centres in six Indian cities, plans to double its capacity over a period of three years
New Delhi: Global Internet solutions provider Tata Communications Ltd on Wednesday said that it has plans to invest $200 million (about ₹ 1,200 crore) over a three-year period to double its data centre capacity in India.
“We plan to invest more than $200 million towards doubling capacity in India from 5 lakh sq. ft to 10 lakh sq. ft over a period of three years," Tata Communications’ Growth Ventures chief executive officer Rangu Salgame told PTI while announcing the launch of a second data centre in Delhi.
The company now has data centres at 44 locations globally. In India, Tata Communications has data centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune.
Salgame said that the data centre market is growing in India at over 20% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) year-on-year and that Tata Communications’ business is growing a bit faster than the market rate.
He said that India’s growth is fuelling the growth of the data centre business, as well as privacy and security issues, which push companies to store data inside the country, rather than abroad.
“Multinational companies who are doing well in India are also looking for storing data within the country," he said.
For its Indian data centre business, Tata Communications has 26% of its power coming from green sources, making it the most green data centre company, Salgame claimed.
