Kolkata: The West Bengal government will lease out land to Jai Balaji group for its proposed integrated steel, cement and captive power plant at Raghunathpur in Purulia district to retain control over its use, Industry Minister Nirupam Sen said today.

Replying to a calling attention motion in the assembly, he said 4,000 acre would be required for the project. The district administration and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation were negotiating with land owners to identify the tracts.

Land thus procured would be given to the Balaji group on lease, he said, adding that it would help the government keep control over land use.

A proposal for buying some portion of land directly from the farmers, however, was also being considered, he said.

The 16,000-crore project, with an installed capacity of five million tonne of steel, three million tonne cement and 1,250 MW of power, would be invested in two phases.

In the first phase, to be completed within three years after land procurement, 8,000 crore would be invested to produce two million tonne of steel, one million tonne of cement and 400 MW of power, Sen said.

The government was negotiating an agreement with the Balaji group for the project. As per the deal, the company would import iron ore from other states while the West Bengal government would help with coal supplies, road and rail links and water, Sen said.

On completion, the project would generate direct and indirect employment for 7,000 people, he added.
