Mumbai: Jet Airways (India) Ltd, the country’s second-largest airline by passengers carried, is all set to expand its operations to Dubai with the launch of new frequencies from its hubs in Mumbai and Delhi.

Dubai is the most lucrative route for airlines in India in terms of demand and profitability.

With effect from 1 March 2016, Jet Airways will launch a sixth daily frequency from Mumbai to Dubai.

With the introduction of this new flight, Jet Airways will offer the maximum number of daily flights between the two cities.

Gaurang Shetty, senior vice-president, commercial, Jet Airways, said Dubai is among the airline’s most popular destinations for business and leisure travellers and it was only fitting to increase capacity to this key market.

State-run Air India Express, IndiGo (run by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) and SpiceJet Ltd are other airlines operating on this route.

Jet Airways will also launch a third daily frequency between Delhi and Dubai, starting 27 March, offering passengers a choice when travelling between India’s national capital and the Emirate, the Mumbai-based airline said in a statement on Thursday.

With the launch of the new frequencies, Jet Airways will operate a total of 11 daily flights between India and Dubai.

This includes flights from Kochi and Mangalore.

Indian airlines compete with Emirates Airline of Dubai.

Emirates completed 30 years of operations in India in 2015, and has since grown its operations to serve 10 destinations in India.

It is now the third-largest international carrier serving India, operating 10.4% of international capacity in the market.

According to a recent study released by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Emirates’ operations in India have contributed over $848 million annually to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), while supporting over 86,000 Indian jobs and generating almost $1.7 billion in foreign exchange earnings.

Dubai is a key destination for business and leisure travel from India.

Another international airline flying on this route is Flydubai.

Flydubai started its service to Lucknow in 2010, the carrier’s first point in India, and is in the process of adding more routes.
