No shortage of LPG, new connection available on demand: Govt

New Delhi: The government today said that there is no overall shortage of LPG in the country and the oil marketing companies (OMCs) have not stopped offering new domestic LPG connections.
“New LPG connections are made available as soon as possible and in any case within a period of 60 days. At present new LPG connections are available for genuine domestic customers ,” minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dinsha Patel said in Lokh Sabha.
Replying to a question, he said: “There is no overall shortage of LPG in the country including Jharkhand and Rajasthan.”
The minister informed the house that “OMCs have released 3.68 crore new LPG connections and 7.5 lakh double bottle connection (DBC) in the country during the period April to December 2008.”
About the waiting list for release of new LPG connection, he said: “Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has reported waiting list of 1,31,471 for release of new LPG connection.”
“BPCL and HPCL have reported nil waiting list for new connections. The waiting list for new connection is expected to be cleared by March 2009.”
On the issue of black marketing of LPG, he said: “OMCs have detected cases of black marketing of LPG in Rajasthan and Jharkhand. Action against all the erring distributorships was taken.”
