Mumbai: Low fare airline SpiceJet Ltd said it will introduce new flights, additional frequencies and a more focused network effective 29 March.

In the summer schedule, SpiceJet will be introducing two new daily flights to Dubai, from Amritsar and Mangalore, the airline said in a statement on Wednesday. These flights are in addition to the five existing daily flights already to Dubai from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Madurai, taking SpiceJet’s service to Dubai to seven flights daily.

Dubai is SpiceJet’s top international destination in terms of capacity out of the eight international cities it currently serves including Bangkok, Colombo, Kabul, Kathmandu, Male (Maldives), Muscat, Sharjah, and Dubai.

On the domestic front, SpiceJet is also adding frequencies to a number of domestic routes such as Chennai, Vijayawada, Delhi, Amritsar, Bangalore, Mumbai, Mangalore, Jabalpur, Dehradun, Srinagar, Hyderabad, Tirupati and Udaipur.

“The new flights to Dubai are a reflection of our success in that market, and will utilize all of our available traffic rights to the city. With these flights, we will have one of the most extensive networks from India to Dubai, especially from non-Metro cities," said Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer, SpiceJet.

“The new frequencies on the domestic sectors reflects our confidence that future growth and value lies in providing more connectivity to non-metros and Tier 2 cities, which is where much of the economic growth of the country is increasingly coming from," he added.

SpiceJet is in the midst of a transition. In mid-January, the current promoters decided to transfer ownership and management to Ajay Singh, a co-founder who had exited the airline in 2010. The ownership transition took place after the airline’s finances deteriorated. The airline which was using discounted ticket sales as a way of managing working capital faced troubles after the aviation ministry asked SpiceJet to stop sales of tickets more than a month in advance on 5 December. That restriction came after the airline cancelled around 1,800 flights in December as it shrank its fleet.

This, along with reports of unpaid salaries, prompted the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to act quickly to prevent a repeat of what happened with Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, the debt-laden airline that was grounded in 2012.

In December, SpiceJet had to briefly ground its fleet for more than 10 hours after oil companies refused to fuel the aircraft until it paid its dues. Later, the aviation ministry lifted the restriction on advance bookings.

“SpiceJet has completely brought back network reliability. We have restarted promotional fares to stimulate the market. Last year, we had sold around 200,000 tickets on 1 fare. This we had sold more than 200,000 seats under our 599 fares," Kapoor said on Wednesday.
