Last year wasn’t the best for global M&A (merger and acquisition) activity: The world was battling a credit crunch and the US, Europe and Japan slipped into a simultaneous recession, reining in corporate predators.

Even so, 2008 was a record year for M&A transactions done by emerging market acquirers and investors in Western Europe, with 256 completed deals valued at €45 billion, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers report.
